Tiny Pocket Gopher at Echo Mountain

by Maraya on May 24, 2011

I was reading about Sierra pocket gophers this morning, and I remembered this little specimen I saw along the trail up Echo Mountain, in the hills above Los Angeles. This was a few months ago, and I’m still kicking myself for not turning on the video camera. He kept popping up out of his hole, eyeballing me, and then disappearing again. The field guide I was reading suggested that they’re rarely seen, so I wonder if I this one learned that hikers sometimes drop trail mix. His head was only about the size of a golf ball. He sure looks hopeful!
